Let’s face it—standing in front of a camera can be intimidating, especially if you’re not used to it. Many people feel awkward, stiff, or nervous during a photoshoot.
But here’s the thing: you’re not alone. In fact, it’s completely normal to feel this way! Whether it’s your first photoshoot or your tenth, nerves can creep in. The good news? There are ways to get comfortable and look your best on camera.
Why photoshoots can feel uncomfortable
Standing in front of a camera can make anyone feel exposed. You suddenly become conscious of every movement, unsure about your expressions or body language. That sense of being “on display” can cause stress, and this anxiety often shows in the photos. The good news is that with the right approach, you can shake off the tension and get those great, natural shots.
Trust your photographer
They’ll guide you through the shoot, offering advice on poses and making sure you’re comfortable. Don’t hesitate to communicate if you’re feeling anxious.
My job is to guide you, not just click the shutter. I’ll direct you on posing, angles, and expressions.
I am experienced at this. But If you’re feeling unsure, then please feel free to speak up.
Let's review your images as we move along and feel free to ask why certain lighting set ups are being employed
Nobody is perfect in how they look so, if you have a certain side of your face you prefer or you are body conscious, then let me know.
Preparation
Confidence is built through pre-shoot communication with your photographer, mood board creation (the shoot plan) and preparing yourself for the shoot.
Choose outfits that you feel good in, not just what you think looks stylish. If you feel awkward in a blazer, it’ll show. If you love how you look in a certain colour or neckline, bring that.
Stay hydrated the day before and get some rest. It affects skin, energy, and posture more than you think. The camera's are super high end resolution, and key see way more detail than the human eye, so sleep well, eat and drink well and be relaxed.
Don’t overdo makeup or grooming last-minute — go with a version of your best self, not a different self. Honestly, less if more. And if you wish your makeup or hair to be at their best, then we can provide hair and makeup artists if you require.
Connection is everything
If you’re doing branding or headshots, imagine you’re connecting with your ideal client. If it’s personal, think of someone you love and feel safe with.
Breathe. Smile softly. Let your eyes carry the emotion, even if it’s subtle confidence. Subtly goes a very long way on camera. Less is more!
Movement is your friend
Stiffness shows. Motion helps me capture natural expressions, and body language.
Don’t lock into one pose. Shift your weight, gently adjust your shoulders or head, or laugh between shots.
If it’s a full-body or lifestyle shoot, walk slowly, interact with your environment, or use your hands when talking.
Trust your instincts: Often, the “in-between” moments — a glance down, a quick laugh — produce the best shots.
Perfection vs authentic
Why let perfection be the enemy of good…………….we may all want perfection, but we all appreciate authenticity every time.
…..and enjoy the process
The camera captures presence, not perfection and the more confident and comfortable you feel, the better your photos will turn out. Even if it feels awkward at first, trust that it’ll get easier as you settle into the shoot. Don’t forget—everyone feels nervous at the start, but by following these tips, you’ll be capturing those natural, beautiful moments in no time.
